mail lookup problem

Ok, here is a description of the problem I'm having, I can't figure it out,
hopefully someone here may have some info that can help.

We have a domain "domain" and we host our own exchange server. We host our
www site externally through someone else. Our mx record externally is set
up as mail.domain.com. when inside the office everyone just uses the
exchange server to access email. The problem is we have field techs with
laptops that are in and out of the office. mail.domain.com does not work
from on the LAN, it tries to resolve to our public IP address and doesn't
get routed properly. I've tried setting up the name server in DNS for
mail.domain.com to point to the internal IP of our server, but if i run a
tracert on mail.domain.com it still resolves to the external ip. I wanted
to set up a host for it, but it won't let me use periods in a host record.
I was able to set up a host for "mail" and it works if tracert to
"mail.domain" but still doesn't work for "mail.domain.com".

Does anyone have any guesses as to what i'm doing wrong? Our internet
gateway and router is on a different server than the domain server, i tried
messing with the hosts file on the router but it doesn't seem to affect
anything on the LAN.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you name the zone domain (single label name) or domain.com (legal DNS
name)?
You need a zone named domain.com.

AH!, the zone is just named domain not domain.com, I will create a zone
named domain.com and tryit. What all will I need in this zone? Should I
remove the other zone when I create this one?

That's a good deal and no you should not need the "domain" zone.
