Mail client problem after installing other software

B

Bill Lathan

I recently installed some of Norton's 2005 software. After that, upon
startup I receive a dialog box titled "Microsoft Outlook" with the following
text: "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client
cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set
it as the default mail client."

I have Office 2000 installed, but not Outlook as I use Outlook Express (OE).
OE
still works fine even with the above message. But if I go to options within
OE on the general tab, the options to set OE as the default mail client (and
news client) are grayed out so that I cannot set these options.

Does anyone have a clue as to what I can do to rectify this spurious
message? Obviously, it is not keeping me from getting mail, etc.; however,
it is an irritant. Also, what possible messaging request occurs upon
startup?

TIA,

Bill

Go to Start | Run and type the following:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
(Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct)

Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools | Internet Options |
Programs and set OE as the default mail (and news) program.

Also, turn off email scanning by Norton, it's not necesary.

Received the following from Bill :-

<quote>Thanks for the message, Keith. However, it does not work for me.
I checked
the path of msimn.exe and it was as you specified. The command
apparently
took, i.e., no warnings; however, I still cannot set OE as the default
mail
program. There is no Programs tab in OE 6; it's under General but the
options continue to be grayed out so they cannot be changed.

Also, could you please explain why it is not necessary to scan incoming
e-mail messages.
Thanks,
Bill

A couple of things before we get to your problem Bill - it is not
considered polite to email privately, please post in the group only so
that all may benefit. Use the Reply Group button and no other. And
secondly, my name is NOT Keith!

Are you absolutely sure that you typed exactly as above, copy and paste
is the preferred method, and included the quotes?

OE specific NG.

Sorry, Kath, obviously my eyes had problems with the small font; I saw
"Kath" and interpreted it as Keith.

Yes, I typed it correctly. And I also tried pasting your link in a DOS box,
and still no go. I will look at the ie6 group you mention. However, I would
appreciate an idea of why you say e-mail scanning by Norton is not
necessary.

Thanks,

Bill

The group is for OE6.

Email scanning adds absolutely nothing to your level of protection. If
your AV product has a background system scan that checks files as they
are opened, that is all the protection you need. A virus cannot do any
damage at all unless it is opened, at which point the background scan
will stop it, provided your AV program recognizes it.
