I finally got fed up with all the ad's using the flash
player, and uninstalled it, is there anything else that I
could use instead, that allows me to disable the bloody
flash, so ad's can't bother me, without having to go thru
the install/uninstall all the time.
as it is now if I visit a site that I really need/want the
flash player I have to reinstall!

Microsoft windwos XP service pack 2 solves this probelm.
But still it is in beta virson and you candown load from
microsoft website
final release will come soon

If you are using windows 2000 you can use some third
party tool like popblockup....i am sure about the name

Recently, I began to receive spam messages that simply
pop up on my computer screen. After a little research, I
discovered that this spamming technique uses Windows'
built-in Messenger service, which sends messages in a
broadcast across a network. The way to block these
annoying messages is to disable the Messenger service. In
Windows XP, you can do this through the Control Panel.
Navigate to Administrative Tools | Services. Double-click
on Messenger and click on Stop. Then set the Startup Type
to Manual or Disable. Click on OK and the pop-up spam
will be blocked.

Network administrators have used the Messenger service
(not to be confused with the MSN Messenger instant-
messaging clients) to broadcast notices to all network
users, but these days they're much more likely to use e-
mail. On most networks, the Messenger service is simply
not needed, and it's certainly useless when your system
is not connected to a network.

In Windows NT 4.0, 2000, and XP, the Messenger service
receives messages from other computers on the network,
typically transmitted using NET SEND at the command line.
For example, the command NET SEND * Wanna buy a duck?
sends the message Wanna buy a duck? to all users (see
Figure 2 ). For more details on using this command, enter
NET HELP SEND at any command prompt.

The type of spam described here subverts the same
service, causing it to pop up unwanted commercial
messages. Windows 95, 98, and Me do not have this
problem, as they receive such Net messages only when the
WinPopup applet is running.

If you're running Windows XP or 2000, the instructions
above will turn Messenger off. With Windows NT 4.0, it
may be difficult to locate the Services applet. In this
case, launch Help, select Services in the index, and
select enabling/disabling below Services. The resulting
help topic provides a link that launches the Services
applet.

If you don't want to disable the Messenger service, you
can prevent its misuse by configuring your firewall to
block inbound UDP and NetBIOS

I appreciate your efforts, however, this is not a
messenger issue, nor subject, This is also a W2k forum,
not XP, the OS is W2k.
I asked about macromedia flash player, not just popups!
I already have a pop up stopper, and delt with messenger.
Please confie your response to the macomedia flash player
issue, thanks

You can always remove the ActiveX in C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files and set the address where Macromedia Flash comes from in your hosts file to point to 127.0.0.1. SWFASH.INF remove it.

Thanks George.
I've not played with my host file at all.
So, I'm not exactly sure what you're saying.
I have only one entry in my host file, the local host
and that's it.
Could you give me an example , that's a bit more clear to
me, TIA!

If you use IE for your browsing, you are screwed.

However, if you use a decent browser like Mozilla or Firebird/Firebox
then there are extensions that stop Flashcrap from playing except
when you want it too. I think Opera also has this capability, but
I really don't know for sure.

Well once it is installed (the ActiveX in C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program files) then the hosts won't help. Because you already have it. You'll have to uninstall it first. Then you put this in your hosts under:

127.0.0.1 localhost

with a carriage-return

127.0.0.1 download.macromedia.flash

Then when you visit a site that wants to load the Flash ActiveX either nothing will happen or you see an error in lower left. But page itself still should load fine. Make sure you turn off Display a notification about every script error in IE Properties | Advanced. Because that is what you'll be causing.

Thanks George, now I understand what your trying to tell
me.
I can't do anything with my work computer, not the admin.
However I can and will do something with my home computer
