macro variable in footer

Hi- I have a WORD97 template which uses many DOCVARIABLEs.
They all work well except for the ones in the footer.
Whenever I put a DOCVARIABLE in the footer,and try to run
the program, it immediately bombs out with a WINWORD error
window saying: "Winword caused an invalid page fault in
module WINWORD.EXE." Does this mean that DOCVARIABLEs may
NOT be used in footers? Or, am I just doing it wrong? Part
of the "code" is: "...on this date
{DOCVARIABLE "MailingDate" } in an envelope ..." Thanks

I believe that's right: DocVariables in the header/footer will crash Word
97.
