machine restarted for seemingly no reason

I was working on my computer and my machine suddenly restarted out of the
blue. There was no shutdown activity at all. It was like somebody flipped a
switch.
I did a full system scan for viruses and found nothing (virus definitions
updated this morning).

Is there anything I can look for? I'm using Windows 2000 SP2.

Have you checked that the power lead is plugged in properly? Could it have
been a mains power fluctuation? Has it happened more than once? If its only
happened once and there is no obvious cause I wouldn't waste too much time
trying to find an answer.

Thanks for replying. Where is the 'mains power'?

BTW I do use a UPS.

I am not sure if it happened before. I do recall a problem
with my IOGear Mini KVM switch but I don't know if that's
related. In that instance the monitor kept switching on
and off and I had to unplug the KVM switch to reset it.
That happened a couple of times.

I have 2 machines connected with the KVM switch. The
problem occurred on a new P4 that I've used for a couple
of months. I checked log files for System and
Administrative after the shutdown and didn't see any
errors.

The behavior is unusual because my P3 never did this in 3
years of daily use.

Perhaps the KVM switch?

Have you checked that all your fans are working properly? Overheating
can cause a machine to suddenly shut down.

Cheers,

Cliff
