Mac data forks

I had a user today that could not delete a file from a Mac on the windows
server. The Mac would get the message that another application was using the
file so it could not delete it. Windows did not show the file as being in
use and I could delete it from windows without a problem.

Is information stored in the data fork that hold which application has the
file open?
Also, is there a way to view what is contained in the forks?
(I'm new to this fork stuff)

The resource fork contains the type and creator of the file + the icon and
more

The data fork contains the document itself

You can open the resource fork with "resedit" on a Mac
(http://tc.versiontracker.com/product/redir/lid/118474/ResEdit_2.1.3.sea.bin
)
