M$ VM or Sun

I'd bet on Sun since they are, after all, the creators of the Java VM.

MS java usually renders more websites (sun "may" crash IE on some),

Unfortunately...the ms java ends support on Feb/2004 (afaik)
so like it or not...you are stuck with Sun Java. I am using for
a few XP machines the 1_40_03 but you have to decide if
latest one works fine then that's "usually" most secure version.

Then there's this IBM and "java beans" coming up...and that's
going (looks like) to take some more folks into Sun territory.

PS...you_can install both ms and sun java and switch from one
to another using the IE / tools / options ...java
Just shut down and restart the browser session and voila!
