a friend, running windows xp home edition, cannot start her windows since
she always get a message (during bootup time) of "the application failed to
initialize properly (0XC0000005) CLICK OK TO terminate the application.
the message box is entitled lsass.exe.
the only solution that i've seen on the internet is:

"have just now managed to recover from the Sasser worm. My antivirus
"caught" the worm by deleting lsass.exe. Deleting this caused my computer to
be unbootable. I had to use the recovery CD from Dell. I pressed F12 to boot
from CD and then I had to press F8 to accept the service agreement. Next I
pressed enter not R. On the next page I pressed R to re-install and the
healing process began. My data was preserved and twelve and a half hours
later my system is functioning again. Six hours of that was re-installing
the windows service packs and updates!"

questions: does anyone have a beter solution?
does dell issue a Recovery CD with each new computer? She has a 4300 dell,
about 3 years old.

Yes. Install the patches as they are released, instead of
waiting until you have a problem

Or install Linux, or buy a Mac

Why not create an XP slipstream CD with all the servicepacks/drivers/hot
fixes included. Then when you need to rebuild the PC, it will be fairly
up-to-date. See http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49
on how to slipstream

Other thoughts are

1 use symantec ghost to create an image of the disk regularly.I usually have
an image created after the SP2 pack was installed and then monthly

2. I have been saved several times from corrupted windows files by using
anothe symantec program called goback.
