my neice got tired of the computer shutting down every 5

Just a suggestion....try booting in SAFE Mode and restoring it from the
Recycle Bin.

Is she grounded for messing with you computer and deleting an XP file
without permission?
Do you know how to properly remove sasser?

You need to turm on a firewall IMMEDIATELY. Either ZoneAlarm or the
built in XP firewall
ZoneAlarm is available free at:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

To stop the shutdown process
Start - Run - type cmd
in the command line type shutdown -a
Do this after the countdown had begun.

Please see:

Go here to get free removal tool:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp

Or update your own antivirus and run it.

Details on the patch needed to prevent it:

After you get the computer up and running; or to get it up and running,
check out the newsgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support and look
under the Lsass.exe subject. Roger pointed me to the article that at
least got the computer up and running again.... Jeff F

Greetings --

1) Forbid your niece from ever touching your computer again.

2) Boot from the WinXP installation CD and perform a repair
installation.
