You Compac probably lacks anything but a 'factory defaults' restore. If you
failed to backup your system there is no way in without a working account.
Try Recovery Console if you can, and do a 'chkdsk /f'

does this sound like sasser virus? are there any specific programs i can
save to disk and run as boot disk to help here. i dont mind complete
reinstall but it takes sooo long! all my files are on a separate partition
so only windows needs reinstalled and updated.

In some way the file WMIPRVSE.EXE is being damaged by an update. it's
probably a conflict with something you have installed apart from standard MS
files. A number of people have been having this lately. I would expect a
KBase article on the subject soon.

(probably additional to this:)
The Wmiprvse.exe process may experience a memory leak when WMI services and
RPC services are extensively used in Windows XP with Service Pack 2 :

Only changes in last 24 hours were: insalled 1 gig RAM memory upgrade for
Dell Dimension 4400 with XP Home OS . . . adjusted My Computer / Performance
Options / Visual Effections tab(s) for for "best performance" . . . and
switched virtual memory paging file size from 384 mb to 1024 mb.

Now, regardless of F8 mode selected upon boot up, can't get past flash
screen as no account(s) is/are presented and I keep setting an lsass.exe
error stating "Security Accounts Manager initialization failed. Error
status: 0xc0000008." along with instructions to click on OK, reboot to Safe
mode and check events log. Endless loops of this. Any thoughts??
