Error: lsass.exe Object Name Not Found

Hi there heres the summary:

My Windows XP Home Edition SP2 ceases to load at the desktop screen with the
following error:

lsass.exe Object Name Not Found (lowercase "l" in lsass.exe)

Hitting OK restarts machine & the cycle continues.

This is the THIRD time I have had this error in a fortnight. I have googled,
searched the support forums and the only solution that has worked is for me
to:

Attempt to repair windows using the Compaq XP Home Edition (Sp1) disk but
whilst windows appears to succesfully repair, the error simply appears again
as the desktop loads. (I do not get a Service Pack 1 / Service Pack 2
compatibility error).
As a result I run chkdsk (no disk errors are found) , fully format and then
use my Compaq Factory Restore disks to fresh install XP.

I am simply at wits end as it takes me at least two days to reconfigure all
my many photography related programs etc and am sick of the whole process!
I am considering buying a new laptop but hoping there might be one last
solution...

Points to note:

I have fully uptodate antivirus (AVG) and ZoneAlarm Pro firewall (set for
highest securiy) running.
I scan DAILY for spyware etc and even ran MS Malicious Software removal tool
- clearly to no avail.
My Home Edition XP is kept uptodate with automatic updates.
My flatmate's computer is on the same homoe broadband network (our router
has its own firewall as well) and his computer has not recieved any threats
of this nature.

The first time this error occured I used a Koppix Linux bootable disc to
access my harddrive and replace the lsass.exe file with another - this did
not rectify the problem.

All my data is intact and can be backed up using Koppix.

System Restore is enabled but I cannot access windows to try a restore reset
either obviously.

The system is a 3 1/2 year old Compaq Presario 2500 laptop with a harddisk
that is apprx 2 years old, P4 2.8ghz , 708MB of RAM, 40GB HD. I do not
usually recieve any other errors and the machine works very very well (no
lags , crashes etc).

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated...and might save me $$$
buying a new laptop!

Many thanks - Jess

Further points to note:

The first time the error occurred it was after a routine sytem restart.

The second time it occurred I had installed a fresh set of WinXp updates and
had to restart.

The third time it occurred I had made no significant changes to the system
(routine restart).

I have formatted and resintalled XP more than a year ago using the same
Compaq provided XP / Factory restore discs and I never had any problems.

I ran the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool prior to this latest error
(only a few hours before!) and no threats were found (no sasser etc).

Thats all the additional information I can think of....

Thanks for the tips Nass:

Heres what happens when I try the first steps in the support article:

I hit F8 and try to select last known good config:

Windows Cannot Start as the following file is missing or corrupt:

\ WINDOWS\ SYSTEM32\ CONFIG\ CONFIG\ SYSTEM

I restart and attempt to start Safe Mode with Command Prompt. The same error
reoccurs. The last three lines of the script are:

....\ BOOTVID:dll
....\ config\ system
....\ config\ system.log

The suggestion in both cases is to repair windows using the installation
disc. I will attempt to backup data first and try this though Im not
hopeful...

Right I've performed a Windows Repair Installation but the lsass.exe error
persists.
I get a small screen saying "Windows setup is restarting" after the XP green
bar loading screen, the screen goes black and I get the error box (and the
restart cycle continues).

I have tried Safemode with command prompt - it reads Windows XP safemode etc
at the top of the screen but the same error box appears and the only option
is to hit ok and restart.

I can access the Recovery Console once the XP Setup CD is in place but am
unsure what commands to run. Those listed in this article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883268 are listed as unrecognised commands...

Any suggestions? Could this be a hardware error if its so reocurrent?

Many thanks

Jess

Hi Jess,
That configuration error may require a bios reset to defaults. Just an
idea. Maybe you added some hardware or adjusted a piece of hardware.
I'm guessing, but seeing that configuration error made me think about
hardware.
Have you checked inside the computer for a loose cable, perhaps do that
when you reset the bios to defaults.
Don't forget to go back into the bios and set it to what suits your
computer later.
You would have to reset the time. You may like to check the computer clock
also. Possibly the CMOS battery is running low. I'm still only guessing
though.
