lsass.exe system error - an invalid parameter was passed to a serv

After dowloading updates for Symantec Norton Anti-Virus, I was asked to
reboot the system. When I did, I received the following message:

lsass.exe system error - an invalid parameter was passed to a service or
function

Every time I click "OK" it loops through the reboot again and comes back to
the same message. I am not technically adept individual, but I can follow
instructions. Any help would be great.

P.S. I did Google the problem and found many threads proposing answers to
this problem dating back as far as 2003. But the solutions I found were on
message boards heavy in tech jargon that lost me, or proposed so many
different solutions that I wasn't sure which one I should follow for fear
that I would do irreparable harm to my machine.

Two options that I can think of. First, call Norton's tech support line and
explain the problem. Maybe they've had this come up (many times?) before and
they know how to fix it. If that fails, you can insert the Windows install CD
and start the computer. The first or second screen that appears has an option
to press "R" to start the Repair Console. Once there, type the command "copy"
followed by a space then type lsass or lsass.exe and see if it that will
repair a corrupt file and get the computer working again.

Hey there

I have this problem too, and as Shawn said he isn't technically adept, nor
am I. I have been in contact with Symantec, but because I cannot access the
affected computer, they couldn't solve the problem by using remote access (I
contacted them through Live Chat on a different computer)

However if I did install the CD and start the Repair Console, would that
remove my program files?

If the Repair Console warns that you'll lose all data, then yes, you'll
lose Program Files. Use a BartPE CD to copy all wanted files to another
hard drive. Download the image, burn to a CD, place in the damaged
computer and boot from the CD.
