lsass.exe error

Hello I'm trying to install Windows XP Prof. on a laptop
but when it tries to install it has an error with the
lsass.exe (A write opereation was attempted and a volume
error orrcurs). It quickly restarts after this and does
this over and over. Any help would be appreciated.

Is this a clean install or an upgrade? Lsass.exe is the security manager
and if its damaged then you'll need to inplace upgrade the machine at the
very least.
