Windows XP SP2. Put my PC in stand-by for a few hours, turned it back on and
got an lsass.exe error: 'An invalid parameter was passed to a service or
function'. Now it's stuck in a reboot loop and the only way to make it stop
is power it off.

Copied the lsass.ex_ from the operating disc and renamed it but that did not
work. Not sure what to do.

Hmmmm... Maybe the sasser virus got onto your system?

At starting pc,tap the F8 key,safe-mode,enter xp as administrator, locate the
new Isass.exe file (on xp cd,etc),move the file,move to C: windows,xp should
replace old with new auto..If desktop is unavailable, boot to xp
cd,recovery,try
typing: Copy /? or maybe:Attrib /? Read kb307654 for info to recovery.Or,
boot to xp cd,select, install xp,repair this copy. You loose only xp updates
