lsass.exe accidentally renamed

Hi
having been told that lsass.exe is a virus, I renamed it
lsass.exe.old - since then I have obviously discovered
that I have renamed the bona fida lsass.exe file
erronenously! Now after a weird message in blue about a
connection not being found, it goes through the usual
memory check, but never gets round to loading the XP HOME
operating system. I just get a black screen and the mouse
cursor. I can select safe-mode, but the same happens there
as well. I know now I should never muck around with files
the system32 folder, but how can I get my desktop back?

Obviously you have to rename lsass.exe back to its original name. Insert the
windowsxp cd, boot to recovery console and use the "ren" command line
directive to rename the file back.

For future problems get yourself the programme ERD Commander, it's pretty
cool, you boot into a winxp-like interface and can repair corrupted windows
installation
