low virtual memory

Over the past couple of days I keep getting an error message that says you
are low on virtual memory. Then another message sying that explorer is not
responding, which causes me to close the program. What does this mean and
any ideas on what can I do to fix it?

The best result to relieve this issue is to add more memory (RAM) to
your computer.

For that one you will have to look in Event Viewer (right-click on My
Computer and select Manage) for an error record in the Application or
System category whose date and time corresponds to the explorer
lockup. Double click on the error record to see the details of that
error.

Good luck

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. What is the Total,
the Commit Charge and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message.
This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with
links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

This means that your pagefile is too small. Let the system manage the
pagefile size.
In addition, more RAM would be helpful as it would reduce the need for the
pagefile.

Probably this means that explorer is waiting on some resource (such as a
temporary buffer somewhere) to become available. If so, then the small
pagefile size is part of the problem. Additional RAM may help.

Hiya,

Memory or "RAM" is a very important part of your PC.
It's FAST (e.g. DDR400 = 400 million accesses per second.)

But as programs run, they fill up RAM - that's where programs sit when running, AND their data.

Eventually, it's FULL.

But the PC pretends it has more RAM by using some of your hard disk as if it WAS RAM, at least from the point of view of
the programs.

This pretend memory, actually on disk is called "Virtual Memory".

It's SLOOOOWWWWWWWW.....

And,
if the HD gets full, everything grinds to a halt, because a PC MUST have RAM free to do anything really.

So,
you want more RAM - OR bigger hard drive, or at least - cleanup HD.
