Low file system benchmark

Fitz

I'm running 2 X 36 GB Raptors (RAID 0) in an AMD64 3200+. Windows XP Pro
w/SP2. 1GB Mushkin PC3500 (2-3-3-6).

SiSandra 2004 SP2 gives average to high comparison scores in all areas
except "File System Benchmark" which comes up with an average transfer rate
of 77 Mbits/sec. The same RAID config listed for comparison shows 95
Mbits/sec. Almost 25% less?

A check in device manager shows correct RAID drivers (Silicon Image S3112r),
UDMA 6 transfer mode, and no problems.

Any ideas as to why to low performance, and what I could try to resolve it?

Thanks,
Fitz

Possibly nothing. The listed comparison doesn't mean a one for one like
and things such as Antivirus software can hammer rates if you've got it
to scan all files on access for example.

Anyway, why would any sane home user use RAID 0 alone? Its like paying
twice the money for half the reliability. Unless you're routinely
working with large files then the benefits are minimal.

I did have anti-virus and various other processes running during the test. I
was under the false impression that the benchmark would run independent of
those.

Nobody has ever claimed I am sane, however, I'm not running just the RAID
config. I back up routinely (automatically when available) to a 3rd (ATA)
drive that is independent of the RAID config. I do some photo/video "work"
(strictly the home video, family pics stuff) and like having the RAID setup.

Thanks for the help,

Fitz

Do not believe benchmarks that tell you theoretical data burts speed,
since they practically never occur !!!

Trust only the Sandra´s Drive Index (if this version reports it) -
thats real life performance of your HD subsistem & HD bench score.

To compare with others you can go to my site under comp/bench & there
you have also Sandra2001pro (stripped) DL to bench your HD setup to
get that index (you can see my bench of my old drive there too). Than
TELL me here the result in points you have got; I am very interested
in this result (comparable to result also with your Sandra version
index- for me to see the difference between that versions) ; please do
it for me .. :) Thanks! (do that w/o any background applications
running if possible)...

If a benchmark could turn off, or bypass, AV then it would be a trivially
easy exploit, don't ya think?
