low disk space problems

My problem is like others on this board, but after several reformats and working on two computers I may be able to shed some more details. I have been able to duplicate the problem on an HP laptop and a Gateway 610XL running XP Home on the laptop and XP media edition on the gateway. 40 gigs on the laptop and 200 gigs hard drive on the Gateway. Both have fresh installs after a complete disk format (0's). If I log onto a G5 macintosh server and transfer ANY data off of that hard drive on either machine, the 'low disk space' errors start to come. The properties on the 'c' drive show a couple of megs of free disk space only, even though there is about 5 gigs of data on the drive. System restore to ANY previous point does not fix this problem. Of course with the OS thinking there is little disk space, not much can be done on the computer at this point. I would love for the wiz kids to figure this one out as I am baffled

Thanks in advance
Michael

Is there more than 200 mb free space on the hard disk / partition? Using Windows XP you need to enable show hidden files first to get the correct figure. Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings. Then in Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select Properties.

Any Norton programmes?

How much RAM memory? What is allocated paging file size? Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Performance Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory, Change, Allocated Paging File Size?

How is the hard drive formatted? FAT32, NTFS or other? Is the drive partitioned?

Hope this helps.

If this is just an anomaly when doing that particular task, and you're sure
that your disk space isn't really low, and you find the Low Disk Space
warning annoying, you can disable it. Kelly previously posted a couple of
methods:

Disable Low Disk Space Message (Line 65)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Or...

TweakUI/Taskbar/Uncheck Warn when low on disk space
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Note: This will turn off the Low Diskspace warning on all your drives!
