Low disk space on drive "C"

G

Guest

I keep getting this pop-up!

I have 36 gigs on this drive ( "C") and can't figure out how I used this
much space!

I've remove some programs an re-installed them on another disk, but it just
doesn't seem to help.

I've remove cookies, spyware, compressed the disk space etc, but I'm now
down to 250 megs on my drive.
I've also tried to remove non-sequitor text documents, but now I'm not sure
what other doc's I can eliminate without damaging my programs.

One other thing....I've calculated the amout of space all the program files
use in the "ADD OR REMOVE" programs control panel and it's no where near 36
gigs!

Any sugestions???

TIA, VB

Have you run disk cleanup? (start > run > type "cleanmgr.exe" (without
quotes) click OK

When you do that, choose the option to delete all but the most recent
system restore point. Then configure system restore to use less than
the default 12% of your disk (just under 1 GB ought to be OK)
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskspace.html

Are you using Norton Protected Recycle Bin (and haven't emptied it)?

Download and run a disk space analyzer, like JDiskReport
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/jdiskreport.html and see what's taking up
the space.

What program is giving this message?
In Windows Explorer right click C: and choose Properties. What does it say?

In IE click Tools | Internet Options. Clear Temporary Internet Files and
then set it to 50 MB.

What do you get when you go to My Computer, right-click the drive,
select Properties?

Frank, i'm getting this pop-up (low disk space) with XP home.

I right clicked properties on disk "C" and it tells me "203mb" left on the
drive.

I Cleared Temporary Internet Files, but I don't see how to set to 50 mb.

You need a new, larger drive.

don't wait too long.

I just ran JDiskreport.
It says...I'm using 9.5 gigs.
How am I using up the other gigs???

I'm going to sleep now.
I anve a 3 Am pickup tomorrow.

The Windows folder (and subfolders) take up 4 gig on my machine. Are
you saying all your programs, data, etc., only take up 5.5 gig (your
pagefile probably takes up at least 500 meg if it's on that drive)?

I would start checking folders to see what is eating up the space. Make
sure you have your Explorer settings to view hidden files and folders.

System Restore allocation.

Temporary Files allocation.

If you have Norton installed, and it includes a safety feature for the
Recycle Bin, then list that among the possibilities (and UNINSTALL it
ASAP).

Assuming IE6:
Tools | Internet Options
Click Settings in the Temporary Internet files section.
You should see it.

Get a bigger hard drive.
