I have lost my Windows XP Home installation CD, but have
the everythin else that came with it (box, Product key,
etc.)

Is there anyway of getting just the CD replaced, as I
don't want to pay £70 for a new copy, and need to
reinstall windows on my PC.

Does Microsoft UK offer replacements with just the cost
of the CD and P+P to be covered?

any help would be appreciated

I have the receipt for my bicycle that I backed over with my car, along with
some spare tires and tools. How do I get a new one. I just don't feel like
paying again?

Crusty your point of view is wrong. When you buy a bicycle you are buying a
piece of hardware which you own. As most of the regulars here like to point
out when you buy a piece of licensed software all you are buying is the
right to use it. You can't loose the legal right to use software. The right
to use is not a tangeble asset and as such can't be lost like a CD can be
lost. As long as the original poster does indeed legally own a license
he\she could either borrow a disc from a friend, download a copy from the
internet or get hold of a copy from anywhere.

Crusty is a turd with legs. His printed spew stinks so bad it literally almost
soaks through the monitor when reading it, causing most people with any
intelligence to gag and choke and thus ignore him thereafter.

Whether you own the software, or the license to use the software, why would
anyone think that the company owes them anything is they are foolish enough
to lose part of it.

I buy a book, copy righted, and the license to read said book. I lose the
book at the beach before I have finished reading it. Who, in their right
mind, would think that the publisher owes me another book, just because I
lost it.

No one sane, for sure.

However, Crusty, wouldn't it be foolish to buy a new one when you could borrow
a copy from a friend? So you wouldn't have to pay twice for the same book. You
already paid for the "license" to read it, right?

That is the point I was trying to make John.

The book publisher, or in this case Microsoft, *owes no one anything*. If
you catch a rep on a good day, they may do something nice for a person. But
no one has a right to expect it - just because they don't want to have to
pay for it again!

My parents taught me to act responsibly, as I am sure yours did you. If I
lose something it is my fault and no one else's. If I have to work hard for
the money to replace it, I will have learned a lessen. There is no free
lunch! Why is it that some expect it, just because Microsoft is involved?

Hell! I have read here where people have lost computers in a fire and then
get a new one from their insurance company. These very same people are
pissed that Microsoft will not "give" them a new operating system. Funny
thing is, they didn't expect a free computer from Dell!

Crusty whether you think microsoft owes anyone anything is irrelevent. If a
person has paid for the right to use a piece of software they don't loose
the right if they loose the CD. Just because they lost the CD is irrelevent.
They still have the right to use the software and as such can download a
copy off the net or borrow a copy or use a backup CD that they made or they
could buy a backup CD. They are not breaking any law. If you want to make
microsoft richer you carry on paying into there bloated coffers. I'm not. If
I buy software I will use it untill I upgrade and if I loose the disc I'll
download a copy (or use my backup CD) because I've already paid for the
right to use it. I'm not paying twice and telling people they should have to
is wrong.

Glen

Fine Glen! Do that. But don't expect Microsoft to bend over backwards and
send you a new CD for nothing. There is nothing wrong with using a friends
CD and your number. Many have done so. It is legal!
