Lost Windows Media Player

After successfully upgrading to Windows XP SP.2 I downloaded and installed
Windows Media Player 10. It ran without problems for three days, this
evening I could not activate it. I have tried returning to the System
Restore Point made after Media Player 10 was installed. I tried
re-installing the programme and got the error msg:
"Windows Media Technologies; This version of Windows Media Technologies is
incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, view the
information at the Microsoft web site."

Comparing two computers on C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player, the
following files appear to be missing on the problematic computer:

custsat.dll, migrate.exe, mpvis.dll, msoobci.dll, setup_wm.exe,
wmlaunch.exe, wpmband.dll, wmpenc.exe, wmplayer.exe, wmsetsdk.exe

How can I repair Windows Media Player?
Is it possible to just copy the missing files from one computer to the
other?

It should be ok if you copy the files. You might try that or try to unistall
media player then reinstall or restore to a time BEFORE media player was
installed and re-install

Hi Tony,
I did try to Restore to the point where SP.2 was implemented (approx 14 days
before WMP 10 was installed).
I can't find the un-install for WMP, it is not listed in the "Add or Remove
Programs."
I suppose it will not cause any harm if I just copy the missing files across
from one computer to the other. If it does not solve the problem then I can
always remove the again but that is for tomorrow (I'm off to get some much
needed beauty sleep now.......Good Night).

Hi again Tony,
I thought I would just try to copy those files across from one computer to
the other before I retired. All hell broke loose; it kept re-booting after
the initial splash screen where I am invited to press F2 or F12. Eventually
I managed to get into the computer and Restored it to the last Restore
Point. Now I really must get some shut-eye.

If you have windows media player 10 go
Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs> Check the box at the top that says
show updates>Look for Windows Media Player 10

G'day Tony,
On the normal computer I see Windows Updates/Windows Media Player 10 and
Windows Media Format Runtime. However, on the problematic computer there
aren't any Windows Updates shown.

Sorry about that last post, my brother (Andrew) had been using the computer
and changed the operative name.
Further to my problem, entering mplayer2 (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q306317) in the
"Start>Run" box I get the same message that I get when I try to re-install
Media Player 10:
"This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this
version of Windows. For more information, view the information at the
Microsoft web site."

Tony,
I resolved the problem with the help of zachd [ms] on the
windowsmedia.player group.
The solution was to roll back Sp.2, install WMP 9 and the re-install Sp.2.
