Lost Welcome Screen Function

On Monday, September 27, 2004, I downloaded and installed
the following. Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374),
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, and
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3, English
Version. Since then, my computer will not use the
Welcome screen and does not return from standby in a
locked mode. I have gone to Control Panel, User
Accounts, Change the way users log on or off. I have
selected Use the Welcome screen and applied it to no
avail. Did these downloads shut off this function?
Thank you for your response.

Try this:
Click on Start and run: type in control userpasswords2
Check the box User must enter a username and password.

Michael, I did as you suggested. I found the box already
checked. I unchecked it then clicked apply. Then I
checked it again and clicked apply, then OK. I rebooted
the computer. No luck. Still no welcome screen and no
request for password. Just boot right to the desktop.
Thank you for your suggestion.

Hi!

I did all of the things suggested above and the welcome screen still doesn't
work. I have a windows XP Home Edition in Finnish, does that make any
difference with using the register files in the website you posted?
My porblems also appeared after udating the system but before downloading
the Service Pack 2.

I'm getting quite desperate here, what CAN I try?

With regards,

Sanna

It's possible that the fix wouldn't recognize a registry in Finish.

Here are some other things you can try:

First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

Second, download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com

The following assumes you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a restore CD or
restore partition supplied by your PC manufacturer.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

If the above doesn't resolve it, I can only suggest removing SP2. It should
be listed in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel as Windows XP Service Pack
2 assuming you elected to save your previous setup during SP2 installation.

Hello, I'm back again...!

I've got a program called spybot, I've understood that it is a similar to
AdAware. If not, then I have to download it.
My Antivirus program is updated and sunning, has been the whole time. No
viruses.
Unfortunately I don't have an actual Windows XP cd, just the system restore
CD. My problem appeared before downloading and installing sp2, in fact it's
been running smoothly. The logon screen did dissappear after updating the
system but I couldn't tell, which updates since I had to reinstall my OS a
while ago and just downloaded and installed a whole lot of updates in the
same time and one after another.
I really don't know what to do, I don't want to reinstall the whole thing
again!

The welcome screen does appear when my computer's been on standby or if I
set a password to my account. The point is, I want the welcome screen to work
without too! That's how it's supposed to work anyway.
My helpdesk hasn't really been able to help me since they're only the
manufacturer of the computer, not windows experts.

What now?

The only thing I can suggest is to start removing updates one by one until
you remove the update that seems to have caused the issue which should
result in the return of the Welcome screen. Conversely, if you are unable
to determine which update, about all you could do is start over, install the
updates one by one until the screen disappears in an effort to determine
which update is the cause of the problem.

As to Spybot, it is similar to Ad Aware in that it searches for malware on
your system. NOTE: It is quite aggressive and often finds things that
belong on the system but nonetheless lists the item as malware. Ad Aware
can do that as well but it is nowhere near as aggressive as Spybot and as
such, may be safer to use than Spybot.
