Lost URL file associations

Alan P. Biddle

Hi,

Beginning a few days ago, I have been unable to launch IE6 from the
URLs within mail messages and other places. Usually nothing happens
at all, or I get a message that there is no association with that
extension.

Going to the Folders|File type there are several with names like
"Internet Shortcut," "URL-File Transfer Protocol," and "URL-LDAP"
which show NONE for file associations.

Is there a way to restore these? I have found a few fixes for file
associations, but they do no seem to address these.

Hi Alan,

1. Click [Start] [Run] type: (Press Enter after each command)

Regsvr32 /i urlmon
Regsvr32 /i shdocvw

2. Restart Windows
3. Open IE [Tools] [Internet Options] [Programs] [Reset Web Settings]

Ramesh,

I am normally reserved, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! That
solved the problem nicely.

Also, thanks for the pointers on the cause. I had recently tried a
registry cleaner program, and was suspicious that it had "cleaned" the
associations, even though the undo did not resolved the problem. The
AumHa forums looks like a great resource.

And if I forgot to say it, thanks!

You're welcome Alan. May I know which registry cleaner is that?
Yeah, nice collection of spyware removal utils/advice (see link under my signature). Originally, the vital source for troubleshooting the shutdown issues in XP.

Ramesh,

Got time to run RegSeeker, and it did NOT cause a problem with the
URLs. Looks like it was a BHO. Again, thanks!
