Lost track of tweaks?

John O'Boyle

I've been tweaking my three systems, which have newly-installed XP Pro.
I've NOT been tracking what I've been doing! ONE of the systems has a
different look than the others, vis-a-vis the "Start Programs" and the
"Logoff/Shutdown" screens. I'd like to know how I DID this so I can do
it to the other systems.

The "Start Programs" screen produces a fully cascaded list of ALL
programs. There IS no highlighting of any individual lines. The
"Logoff/Shutdown" screen produces a drop-down box of options rather than
shut-down / logoff buttons. (Note that on THIS system there IS no
option to "Logoff" in the "START Menu". Seems to me that I once saw an
item that said "Allow Logoff in Start Menu", but I don't recall where
that was.

Can anyone get me started in the right direction?

Thanks.

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Taskbar and Start Menu.
Click on the Start Menu tab.
Click on the Customize button.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Remove the check mark in the box next to "Highlight newly
installed programs".
In the "Start Menu items" box, make sure there is a check mark in
the box next to Scroll programs.

2. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts.
Click on "Change the way users log on or off".
Remove the check mark next to "Use the Welcome screen".
Click on "Apply options".

3. Go to Start -> Run and enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and
hit OK.
In the Local Group Policy editor, navigate to the following
location.

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and
Taskbar

In the right hand pane enable "Remove Logoff on the Start Menu".

There IS no such box in mine.

the box next to Scroll programs.

It WAS checked. Perhaps I didn't speak clearly enough. The program
list DOES scroll if I click on the down-arrow at the bottom. what the
other sytem does (and what I'd LIKE the remaining ones to do) is
"cascade" all the programs across the screen, using as many colums as it
needs to display them all
2. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts.

This stuff worked just fine.

Thanks for all your help.

Untick "scroll programs" on the Advanced tab.
PS: not sure it matters, but I am using the default start menu, not classic.

It sounds as if you're using the Classic Start menu.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Taskbar and Start Menu.
Click on the Start Menu tab.
Click on the Customize button.
In the "Advanced Start Menu options" box remove the check mark
next to "Use personalized menus". Then remove the check mark next
to "Scroll programs".

That should display your programs in multiple columns.

THAT did it! THANKS.
