Lost System Restore

Whenever I go to system restore, I find that it is turned off. I turn it on,
and the next day when I check, it is showing as being off again. Why does
this happen, and why would it turn off in the first place?

Also, in the system restore calendar, there are no dates that I can select
to restore to, i.e., clicking on all dates does not do anything (I guess
because I don't have any restore points to go to in the first place.)

Hi Tolkein,

Check the Event log for System Restore failures:

How to reinstall System Restore in Windows XP?:

Ramesh,

Would you know how to restore the Internet Connection Sharing/Internet Connection Firewall service.
It got hosed and now I get

The specified service does not exist as an installed service. 1060

Thanks...........

Brian,

Let me know the Service Pack level of your system. In Windows XP SP2, ICF is
now called as "Windows Firewall" (with additional features of course). For
Windows XP SP2, the following REG file reinstates the Windows Firewall
service.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/sharedaccess.reg

Download sharedaccess.reg (only for systems running Windows XP Service Pack
2) and save to Desktop. Then double-click the file to merge the contents to
the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows for the
changes to take effect.

Ramesh,

I'm running service pack 1 still because of issues SP2 had with some software I use.
The Internet Connection Sharing/Internet Connection Firewall service is missing from
Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>Services

When I go to my internet connection and try to enable Internet Connection Sharing,
I get - "The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

Thanks
Brian

Brian,

I don't know about the issues you have with SP2, but installing SP2 ( plus
the fixes released after SP2 ) is highly recommended, as they fix a number
of vulnerabilities in Windows.

BTW, you can re-create the ICF service entry by exporting the following
registry branch from another XP SP1 system, and then merging the contents in
your system.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess

I did this and it works. I get a pop up though when I double click on the service that says...

"Configuration Manager: The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present
device"

Any idea's ???

Thanks again !!!

Brian,

See if this note here helps.
