LOST SOUND?

My computer speakers have suddenly gone silent. I suspect that some sort of
application has inadvertently taken over as default sound thingy. Any
suggestions as to how I can restore the default sound settings?

First off do the obvious like make sure you haven't muted the sound. Have a
look by the clock in the right hand side of the monitor for the volume
control and make sure it in not muted. Then check the speakers plugs haven't
come out. Make sure they are plugged in and switched on. Right click my
computer | hardware | device manager and look to see if the sound card has
any yellow or red marks by it. If there is, right click and take the
appropriate action which should be obvious by what you get told. If there is
no mark the drivers are installed ok. Then open the control panel and look
for sounds and audio. Look through the options to see if anything makes a
difference. Repost if you need more info after checking the things I said.

Still no luck. There is no icon for sound on the toolbar. When I open
"sounds and audio" in the control panel, it says "no audio device". Under
hardware, I've tried clicking on several of the options. Still no luck.
