Have you been to your soundcard supplier's website to find and download XP
compatible drivers? I assume you ran the compatibility wizard before you
installed XP so that should have told you whether your soundcard was supported
in XP.

You have to download and install drivers for all the hardware. XP has a
lot of drivers built in, but certainly not for everything. Your Compaq
came with everything preinstalled which is why it worked before! Check
under Device Manager for all your devices - the ones that aren't
working properly need drivers. Compaq should have drivers on one of its
restore disks you got with the machine.
