Lost some folders in transfering .pst from Desktop to Laptop

P

Pam

Here's what happened:

When I open Microsoft Outlook a pop-up says:

The path specified for the file F:\laptopbackup.pst is not valid

After selecting OK a box pops up called†Create/Open Personal Folders File"

You can see it has selected Look In: “My Documentsâ€

And all the folders for my documents are listed

The default File Name to Open is “laptop backup

The Files of Type listed is “PST Files (*.pst)â€

I don't know what it is trying to tell me - I must have selected something
incorrectly when I was going through the Export Import process. Help would
be greatly appreciated.

You first - exactly what is the goal? Why do you believe export/import is
the way to transfer Outlook data? What version of Outlook? How did you
transfer the files? Please describe your entire process in detail.

Export to a File, Personal Folder File (.pst), Next selected Personal
Folders,, include sub-folders, Next ( window called Export Personal Folders
opens and I selected exporting the file to the TravelDrive F: and Allow
duplicate items to be created, Finish, then a window opens called creaete
Microsoft Personal Folders. File: F:\backup.pst Name: Personal Folders
Format: Personal Folders File Encryption Setting: Compressible Encription
no Password selected and clicked OK
The it grabbed to files and loaded it to the Travel Drive.

Then I went to the Laptop, put the TravelDrive in, opened Outlook, Selected
File, Import/Export, Window opens "Import and Export Wizard" selected "Import
from another programs or file", Window opens "Import a File" selected
"Personal Folders", clicked Next, new window opens to select a file - browsed
to the TravelDrive F:

Brian - thanks so much for your interest. Just trying to get back to this
site took more time than I care to admit. The "Response e-mail alert link"
didn't work. I'm mentioning this to give you a clue to my inexperience

Anyway . . .

I was trying to transfer all my folders in the Mail section of Outlook
(Personal Folders under "All Mail Folders). I went to File, Import/Export,
Export to a File or Folder, Browsed to Travel Drive F:\, Outlook

Sorry I must go to an appointment - running late. Hope this is enough info.
I'm working with Outlook 2003.

It is improper to use export/import to transer data from one Outlook to
another. Exporting and importing always lose data and importing a PST has a
history of corrupting mail profiles. If you want to transfer a PST, just
close Outlook and copy the existing PST to the TravelDrive, move the
TravelDrive from one PC to the other, then copy the PST to the hard drive of
the second PC. Put it in any folder that does NOT already contain a PST.
Then either use the Mail applet in Control Panel to add the PST to the
existing mail profile or use Outlook itself to add it (File>Open>Outlook
Data File). After that, you can either use it as it is (as a second folder
set), move or copy the data in it to the default folders (closing the added
PST afterward) or make the added PST the delivery location (i.e., the added
PST becomes your default folder set). Any of these will preserve all the
data in the original PST.

You may find it a better experience if you access these groups with a real
newsreader instead of the buggy web interface.

The Mail view of the Navigation Pane doesn't show all your folders, only
those that contact mail items. If you want to see them all, use the Folder
List view.

Brian - thanks for the file transfer info. I'll give it a try. Also, how do
I get to "Folder List" view?

2) You probably didn't post this, but I didn't understand it all:

That's because you ARE accessing this newsgroup using the awful buggy web
interface!

Click the Folder List button at the bottom of the Navigation Pane.
