Lost Product key for XP Professional

My situation is as follows:

I purchased Windows XP Professional in 2002. My hard drive failed last week
and I'm trying to re-install XP on a new hard drive. The problem is I can't
find my product key and certificate of authenticity. I activated Windows XP
online when I first installed it so I was wondering if there's a way to
retrieve my product key from Microsoft over the phone or via e-mail?

Thank you to anyone who can help with this.

Sorry man but I think you're S.O.L. on this one Microsoft will not give you
a keycode period! You will have to buy another copy.

If this XP had a retail kit, Microsoft should be able to get you a
"replacement" key. If this was an OEM version, then you are on your own.

OME versions where delivered in a cellophane wrapper. Retail version were
in a box.

Microsoft _might_ have a record of your Product Key if you elected to
*register* your installation; Activation alone doesn't create a
long-term record of the Product Key.

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." It is not on the installation CD
in any way, shape, or form. If it was an OEM (factory installed)
license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer affixed to
the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc
Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the
Product Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and
haven't since reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably
of the drive image used at the factory and not your specific Product
Key; therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not
be -- used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of
the Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy
a new license.

Adil, in believing this is your legit copy of Windows XP and should not have
to pay for another one, inconjuction in being declared a pirate and hence
guilty by MS and associate comrade SS folk (even in a libertarian place like
this). See if you can pick one up from sites like keygen.us (careful you can
pick up alot more than your looking for there), or WinMX see if you can get
yourself a product key for your class of WinXP. There is a very good chance
with the keys you shall find, you'll be able to successfully activate WinXP
and (hilariously) get WGA'ed as well. I've seen it happen.

It's your Windows XP, what do you want to do with it today!
