product key issue

I had viruses on my computer that I had to delete everything and reinstall
Windows XP Professional for. Now that I'm trying to use Microsoft Word again,
it asks for my product key number that is attached to my certificate of
authenticity. The problem is that when I put it in, it says it is not a valid
product key. So I called Dell and then Microsoft and both keep referring me
to each other but they either don't have access to a key or won't give it out
or chalk it up to a technical problem. Does anyone know how what the problem
might be or how I could obtain a product key? thanks.

Which product key are you using? Make sure you are using the MS Word/Office
key and not your Win XP key.

Bob;
That article does not apply.
The tools referenced in that article can locate the key if the program is
installed and key already entered.
Since it is asking for the key, it is not on the system.

Did Word come with the Dell computer?
If so it is OEM and Microsoft can not normally help, but there is a slight
chance:

That page applies if Word is retail.

Are you using the Product Key on the sticker affixed to the computer?
That is the key for Windows and will not work for Word or other programs.
Look for the package the CDs were shipped.
The key is normally on that package.

If you have lost the key, you may need to buy Word if you want to use Word.

And the other thing you'd want to try is to make sure you are reading
the key right. 8 & B sometimes look very similar. Same with D & O.
