Lost OE files and folders

All my former above info disappeared, just vanished. I manually scan evr'y
day and install all new downloads too. Nothing found, no virus in the
quarant's to delete.
I followed this fellow's method from another forum:
You probably still own the data. You are simply set to use a new set of
*.DBX
files. (Called 'using a new Identity'. Take a look at the File menu in OE and
you will see a "Manage Identities" item). You can locate the folder used for
storing this Identity at OE,. tools menu, Options, Maintenance tab, "Store
Folder" button. (Mine looks like this: C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{985E6AEA-76C0-4E20-974F-0FBD36506FFA}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express) The long number folder is the identity.

If you did not find ANY '*.dbx' files, you simply failed to look for them
correctly. You would not be getting mail if none existed.

The "Import" feature on OE's File menu might let you recover the data.

I WAS able to locate the dbx's but cannot open them. All I get is what do
you want Firefox to do: open, save to disk? When I check either option,
nothing happens 'cept a repeat of the same question. I created new folders in
OE and tried dragging them, still no information can be view within the
folders, I tried "move to" and still can't open to read the info. Sometimes a
new message form displays with an icon where the attchmnt. would normally be
and it results in nothing. I tried "search" entered the exact phrasing of
the title for the folder found and it reports it cannot find them. Could the
dbx need to be changed to return them to their original place in OE so I can
retrieve my needed files & folders. I really have spent a good 8 hrs. with
this and Just Don't Know What Else To Do.

Go back to Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{985E6AEA-76C0-4E20-974F-0FBD36506FFA}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express Folder. When there create a new folder and place all the dbx files
located there in it. Then copy and paste the old dbx files you
want to access into the Outlook Express folder. That should do it.

In OE, File | Import | Messages
Choose to import from OE6.
On the screen with identities choose the bottom option to import from an
Outlook Express store directory. Click the Browse button and browse to the
folder that holds the old DBX files.

Rich: I am totally brain dead on this. First of all how do I get to "settings"?
I probably was there once upon a time in the past few days! When you tell
me how to do such a simple step that I should know, then they should open?
settings?

Should I do tools, options, maintainence, store folders, enter the identity
above?

Data\Identities\{985E6AEA-76C0-4E20-974F-0FBD36506FFA}\Microsoft\Outlook
will there be a field to enter this path?

Why if they don't open now in their present location will they in above's
settings?

Should I do tools, options, maintainence, store folders, enter the identity
above?

Even more: If I get the instr. from you accomplished, I imagine I'll have to
view each item saved in the folder and then one at a time, cpy & paste them
into the new folder created in OE, yes?

Sorry to be so dense Rich. I think when I do so many different suggestions I
do to in circles. I began this query in the plain XP forum and not this
"beginners" thinkin' I could accomplish the task; WRONG.
You must have the patience of a saint! Jaemy

Mr. Frank Saunders:
I did what you instructed above: Here's the routes I took opening all the +
signs looking for a folder with dbx files. When I got to store directory and
browsed I clicked document and settings---Jaemy---Application
Data---Identities---(there were two of them)---that + opened and did show me
OEX with a forever list of letters and numbers (path perhaps?)---I then again
click browse---select all data from OEX---opted for store directory---got to
Import files, somehow (not sure of the order in the above
steps---Import---Import Was Successful the screen said.
So: now where do I find the files and folders that were imported as they
said successfully?

When you click Browse, browse to the folder that holds the DBX files you
want to import from. Use OE's Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder
to make sure you are not going to the Identity currently in use.

The DBX file must not be Read Only and the Folders.dbx file must be there.

I'm feeling impossibly stupid Frank!
"When you click Browse, browse to the folder that holds the DBX files you
want to import from "
I don't know which on that list of +'s and subs name to look fo that my dbx
files would be in. The only one that made any sense to me was what I did
above. Maybe I totally missed what was in front of my eyes? A Folder Named
dbx? Did I do any of the steps above correctly at all? AAArrrrrggggghhh

Well Frank, I found your own personal site for help! Neat. Do accept paypal?
I did find all the dbx files the others didn't need changing I don't need them
What do I do with all these files now to re-incorporate them into my present
lineup of folders in OE? I must just have needed a nite of brain power-sleep.
I must be close to the end now. I did read your last paragraph on your page.
There must be an easy way???
Good Day To Ya!

ok: so in my search *.db* all the folders showed up. I think I followed your
instr.
To save it, I had the options to "save as". I chose docs. I made a new
folder in the OEX line up, named it, opened it (accessed?) once, then
closed OEX, went back to the found dbx files, deleted the one I want to put
into the newly named folder in the OEX line up.
NOW....."make a copy of the folder you want to restore" What
folder.....didn't I just delete it????
"Copy the file into the "directory" where the previous file was deleted"
Copy what file? Is the directory the list of dbx's searched out?
More than confused, delete, then copy. I'm sorry for my state of mind; once
again I've spent a good 4 hrs experimenting to do this Frank. I Really Am
Giving This Serious Concern and Time Trying To Do.

I'm sorry to get back to you so late, but I'm afraid I'm not going to be
much help. Yes, my site accepts PayPal, but think twice before
contributing. I have the feeling that I have not been any help to you and I
am now too confused about what you've done to give much more.

The single most informative site about Outlook Express is www.insideoe.com
and DBXpress from www.oehelp.com is the most useful program for recovering
lost messages. You have been to my site and have read the clearest
explanations I have been able to write.
