Lost My Computer

Hi All,

Somehow I deleted the My Computer icon from my desktop. What's the best way
to restore it?

I noticed it today when I started to trouble-shoot the consistant crashes
I've been getting. I went to
Start | Help | Detecting and repairing disk errors
and dragged the "My Computer" link to the desktop as a shortcut which DID
get generated with the label "My Computer".

However, when I click on the link in the Help page, I get a window listing
my drives (Hard, Removable, etc.)

When I double-click on on my new desktop icon, I get "Page cannot be
displayed, etc. Yet, when I open its Properties, the Web Document tab's URL
indicates exactly the same address as the link in the Help page.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Richard

Hi,

Right click on the desktop and select properties. Click
on the Desktop tab and then the 'Customize Desktop'
button. You should see some tick boxes for which icons to
display on the desktop.

Regards,

Tim

Richard,

Right-click Desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop
Put a checkmark near "My Computer".

Right click on an empty area of your desktop and click on properties on the
drop down menu that pops up. Go to the Desktop tab and click on the
'Customize Desktop' button. Check 'My Computer' and click ok and ok. If
the 'My Computer' is already checked, try unchecking it and clicking ok and
ok, then go back in and check it.

If you click start and then if you have "my computer" in that listing, right
click it and put a check in "show on desktop".

With XP Pro it's rather easy to restore the my computer icon. Right click
on your desktop, and
click properties Click the desktop tab. Then click the customize desktop
button.
Check my computer in the desktop icons box. Click OK twice.

This was the answer I've been looking for to restore IE Explorer to my
desktop, except it didn't work. Any ideas why? It was already checked when I
looked, unchecking and rechecking didn't help. Is it possible that the file
is not where XP looks for it? Explorer works fine by the way it's just that
from a shortcut I can't change any properties.

Hello,

Many kind souls responded to my plea for help. There were two great
solutions offered, each of which worked beautifully:

1. Right-click the Desktop, then click the Properties item, the Desktop
tab, the 'Customize Desktop' button.and finally the 'My Computer' checkbox.

2. Click the Start button, right-click the 'My Computer' menu item, then
click the 'Show on Desktop' menu item.

That led me to stumble on one more neat thing: Double-clicking 'My
Computer' (or Clicking the Start button and My Computer) leads to the
display of disk references (Hard, Removable and Network) for initiating
Virus scans or Scan Disk or Defragmentation. It's a lot easier than going
through Start | Help for such purposes.

Thank you, one and all,
Richard

Control Panel - Display - Desktop page. Click Customize, and check My

The other will have produced a link into Help and Support - not to My
Computer itself
