lost local network access

User reinstalled system (XP Home SP2) and now cannot access local networked
devices. Access to the internet is ok. This computer is on a home LAN with 3
others connected to the internet via a Linksys Router and Motorola Cable
Modem (Comcast). Attempt to Explore the local area network always rejected
after long delay with message "(workgroup name) is not available. You might
not have permission to use this network resource - contact server admin to
see if you have access permissions for that resource.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

The workgroup name in the My Computer properties is correct.

Run the "Set up a home or small office network" wizard in "My Network
Places".

not sure why, but this worked for me:

Rename ur workgroup name to something else, then reboot, then rename it back
to the correct workgroup name.

Thanks. Tried this, but no change. I turned internet firewall off before
running this wizard.

Bill,

Try this in exact order as listed below:

1. Control Panel > System > Computer Name > Network ID
Run the network wizard and select "This computer is for home use and not
part of a business network".

2. Control Panel > System > Computer Name > Change
Input the same workgroup name that's being used by the other computers.

3. Reboot your machine and try accessing your network.

Changing the old computer name to something else, then rebooting, net
wizard, boot, changing name back, rebooting ... got the computer back in the
network. Thanks for everybody's ideas. Still don't know what was going on,
but at least it is fixed. That's about 15 hours shot.....

Bill,

Glad to hear you got it back in the network. Sounds like their may have
been a naming conflict happening somewhere. Anyway, at least you know how to
deal with similar problems in the future. Be sure to save all these threads
on your system for future references.
