Lost local FP site -- how can I use published site?

I'm using FP 2002

We've lost the original folder that contained the local copy of a FP
website so now the only remaining copy is the actual published website.

I tried downloading the entire site using FTP and then opening that folder
using "Open Web..." in FrontPage. FP informs me that it needs to add some
missing stuff to the folders but when it's done it's stripped out all the
webbots (navigation bars, etc.) and themes.

"Import" doesn't seem to work either. It warns me that it's going to apply
the current (empty) web's themes to the imported which is wrong.

What am I doing wrong here? I'm starting to understand why many people
avoid FP for website design.

If the server has FrontPage extensions and the site was published using http:// open the remote
site and "Publish" it back to your machine. It will then be intact.

Publish is the magic word. In FrontPage *always* Publish whole sites/webs;
*import* individual files.

Create a folder on your hard disc.
Open FrontPage, File - Open Web (Site inFP2003)
In the box type in your online web site similar to http://www.example.com
( the same address you normally publish to)
Log in to the web, then
File - Publish Web / Site
In the destination box, type in the address to your folder,
C:/path/foldername/
and publish.

Does the remote server have the FP extensions? If so then open your site directly on the remote
server via FP File Menu | Open Web / Site and then use File Menu | Publish Web / Site to publish a
copy back to your local computer.

If the remote server doesn't have the FP extensions, then you have to use the method you indicated
below by FTPing the content to a folder on your local HD, then open the folder in FP and let it add
the extensions, but you will then have to reapply any themes, shared borders, FP Includes, and
rebuild the navigation structure.

The Import function only imports the content that is seen by browser.
