Lost Internet Connection

I have two PCs running XP Pro. Cable modem attaches to NIC in 1st PC. I
have a cable from a second NIC going to the 2nd PC. All has worked well
for several months until last week. Nothing was changed (at least to my
knowledge), I just can't connect to the internet on PC number 2. I've
tried going directly from the cable modem to the 2nd computer but
nothing works. I can share files fine between the two. Just can't seem
to get the thing to see the internet. Any help would be appreciated.

First, please do these troubleshooting steps on at least "PC number
2" (although it won't hurt to do them on PC number 1, also):

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). Be sure to update these programs before running,
and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete
temporary and Temporary Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services
programs from starting with Windows - see www.blackviper.com for
services info and www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for programs
info - 5) look in Event Viewer for clues.

After you've done that, if the problem persists please repost. Include
information about the two systems and what you've already done to
troubleshoot.
