Lost IE, Can't Reinstall

Hi!

I'm running Windows 98 on a PII 400mhz PC, have Earthlink
as my ISP & use Netscape 7.1 as my default browser.
Recently, I downloaded & installed Earthlink's newest
software - Total Access 2004 along with Earthlink
accelerator. I began having problems & after several tech
support calls to Earthlink, was advised to uninstall New
software & reinstall
Earthlink's Total Access 2003 software. This eliminated my
surfing problems, but I could no longer use Internet
Explorer...
I only get a page reading 'The page cannot be displayed'
message when I try. Called Earthlink tech support on this &
after checking several settings, they determined I had lost
IE6 files & a possible problem in the windows registry, and
I would need to uninstall & reinstall IE. I was also told
that this problem was beyond the scope of Earthlink's
support & I would have to contact my PC manufacturer. I
have a Micron PC, and it is going on 5 years of age... OS
support is no longer available to me. I tried uninstalling
IE6, then reinstalling with Windows 98 CD... It would not
let me do either. I then tried installing the Windows 98 SE
Update, but it only placed an Icon on my desktop, IE still
not working. I manually deleted IE files on my hard drive &
again tried reinstalling using the Win98 CD, then doing the
Win 98 SE Update again... still no change. I've downloaded
IE6 setup file from Microsoft & tried installing IE but
when I start setup, it needs to access files from web site
& tries to do so with IE ,which does not work. I tried
setup while having the Microsoft download web page open in
Netscape(my default browser), but the setup still chooses
to use IE. I need to have IE on my PC to do any Windows
Updates, and my Norton AV program is giving me error
messages saying it requires IE to be installed. I have not
contacted Microsoft due to the cost to do so. Only thing
else I know to do is format my hard drive, and start from
scratch. Hope I am explaining this well enough for those
who read, to be able to understand my problem. Any help or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If need any
additional info, please let me know. Thanks for your time.

For what it's worth, Bruce, you are not alone!

I have gone through nearly the same process you have outlined and am, like
you, looking for answers. Hopefully someone on this board will be able to
help...

The new Earthlink software has some very destructive capabilities,
obviously. When I deleted the software after it caused a major crash (I'm
running XP Home on a 500mhz Athlon processor), I couldn't restart the
computer. I had to break out the XP cd and use the repair console just to
get back online. Fortunately no data has been lost (yet) but the system
appears to be seriously damaged. IE 6 can't find any web pages and several
other programs are crippled. I'm hoping to avoid reformatting, but things
are not looking promising.

Keep your fingers crossed...
