I'm running XP Pro with recent addition of SP2. In the
last few days I have noticed that icons which have always
appeared in the system tray are no longer appearing after
boot-up. The Norton Internet Security icon has failed to
appear, but the Norton Antivirus icon is still being
shown. At last boot-up I had to manually start MSN
Messenger 6.2, which is set to start upon boot-up. The
SP2 Security Center tells me that Norton Internet
Security is running and that I am firewalled, but can I
trust what this is telling me ?

Has something gone wrong here ? Is there a way to
specify programs that should boot and appear in the
system tray OR am I making a big deal out of nothing ?

This returns now hiding items to view if they are still in the Tray...
Right-click a blank area in the System Tray, then select "Customize
Notifications..." In the resulting dialog box, locate the now-not visible
icons; to change status, click on and note that there is now shading around
status to the right. Click on down-pointing triangle, then select "Always
Show". OK, then Apply and OK to exit. Hopefully, this will restore them.

I yield to our MVP's. I'm not one..

I followed what you described below..again...tried that
already. The button that will slide back and forth
hiding the unused icons hasn't come back with any setting
I've tried. That's one thing. Concerning the other
icons under "Past Icons", I've found the Norton name but
it now show a folder there. Other items, such
as "clipboard" might have the speaker icon next to it.
In general, all items in the "Past Items" category are
either now have a folder beside the name or the wrong
icon. I don't know how to fix this, or what has caused
it (not had any errors or crashes show up before this
happened) and I really don't want to re-install windows
XP and all my software all over again. Any ideas at this
point ?

Chevron is missing:

For some users, setting the very first icon to Always Hide, restores the
arrow/chevron. Note: It does take time for it to become effective.

Icons are missing or disappear, reappear: This happens for most Auto-Logon
users.

Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account
or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

Or if you are running XP SP1 uninstall UPnP from Add/Remove Windows
