lost icons in start, quick lunch and containg folders

I use Windows XP Professional in Compaq nx6120 HP laptop.

My kid did something wrong with an error message on the screen (don't
remember the message).
Now some programs (Fire fox, Adobe acrobat, MS Office) has lost their icons
and double clicking them, even don't bring the "open with program" windows.
Their icons are a windows figure in a white background.

This has happened in quick lunch box, start menu and in the containing
folders however some files which I have made, let say by Excel or Adobe
Acrobat have their icons and double-clicking them, opens the file. This is
the only way to activate those applications.

For your information, I can't activate any command from inside the control
panel.

It appears the shortcuts are damaged. To test this, find excel.exe, right
click it and select, Create Shortcut. Then double click the shortcut to see
if Excel opens. If it does, then replace all the defective shortcuts with
new ones.

Dear Elmo

Thanks for your reply.
The list on "Fix File Association" doesn't have fix for Fire Fox Mozila
explorer.
What shall I do with that one?

The same site has a .url and .http fix. If Firefox won't run when you
click a link, in an email, e.g., these fixes might help with that.
Firefox is started by either the .lnk (shortcut) or .exe (program). If
you have a problem starting Firefox, you might need to reinstall
Firefox, or check for malware.

If it's a malware infection, download, and run these:

Malwarebytes© Corporation
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

SuperAntispyware

Dear Elmo
Thanks for your reply.

I am not sure if it is a malware or not. I want to keep it as the last issue.
I will check with http or url fix.
But even clicking the firefox icon (exe file) doesn't open it and a link
from an email or its shortcut in start does not work at all.

Dear Elmo

Thanks for your helpe. It worked.
I did what you mentioned, all icons faces returned except for Firefox which
its icon changed to icon of white page with narrow blue bar on top and even
with that one, this icon works and opens firefox.

Again thanks a lot.

That's good. Thanks for reporting back.

To fix the icon, you can right-click the shortcut, click Properties,
click Change Icon, locate the file %ProgramFiles%\Mozilla
Firefox\firefox.exe and select the preferred icon.

Generally I solved my problem as some icons returned back, but not all of them.
To fix the icon, you can right-click the shortcut, click Properties,
click Change Icon, locate the file %ProgramFiles%\Mozilla
Firefox\firefox.exe and select the preferred icon.

By clicking "change icon" it gives following error message:
Windows cannot find the file %ProgramFiles%/Mozila/firefox.exe (slashes are
back slashes)

Is there any fix for this?

Also the icons for MS Word didn't come. All icons in start menu didn't
return and I can't use them, but in desktop they have returned.

That's weird, for sure.. See if Firefox is actually in the C:\Program
Files\Mozilla\ folder.

Also look in Explorer and see if the different programs have the proper
icons.

And try registering these from a command line.. some may not be related
to your problem in the least; I just listed some I've seen used for
"similar" problems:

regsvr32 SHMEDIA.DLL (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 ole32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 mshtml.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll (Press Enter key)

Is there some good reason not to check for malware first and keep
malware checking as the last issue?

Reduce the chances of malicious software by running some scans.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

These can be uninstalled later if desired.
