lost hyperlinks - front page 2002

I just opened an account with a new wsp. Before publishing my web to
the new servers I activated front page extensions and waited 24 hrs for
the extensions be to activated vice the suggested 3 hours. I then
reviewed my web in front page and previewed the entire web using preview
in browser. All was as it should be.

I published the web and found that when I reviewed web pages in a web
browser some of my pages did not have link buttons in the page banner
nor in the left side frame.

I opened the web on the web server and found that some of my web pages
do not show hyperlinks when I click on the hyperlink view and then click
on the page in question.

While still on the web server, if I go to the navigation view and click
on the page in question a pop up window states, "Server error: There is
no page with URL 'ARROW.HTM' in this web." In fact all of my files in
my front page web on my hard drive are in lowercase, while this error
message uses uppercase. Not sure if that is significant.

If I look at the file in the folders view on the web server there is a
file named, arrow.htm (lowercase), but of course, as noted above, there
are no hyperlinks to it. If I check the same file in the web on my hard
drive arrow.htm is hyperlinked to index.html.

I am very puzzled by this and I'm hoping someone might be able to point
me in the right direction to solve this. Thanks in advance for any help.

In your local copy, in HTML View check the actual case of the filenames in your actual hyperlinks.

Sounds really strange. Filenames are indeed case sensitive, and Image.jpg is
not the same as image.jpg or image.JPG. I'm wondering if somehow your server
is looking for uppercase... Although I can't see how.

My recommendation would be to log in live on your server through FrontPage,
and have a look at the filenames to ensure they are as they should be. You
may also need to contact your hosting service to inquire about the case
differences (also, they may need to "recalculate hyperlinks").

posting my query I continued to research the problem and found:

This problem can occur if you remove a file from the Web, but the meta
information for the file is still stored in the _vti_cnf folder. The
_vti_cnf folder stores information about the files in your Web.
FrontPage uses this information to list files in your Web, list files to
be published, and generate reports.

To correct this problem, remove the information for the file from the
_vti_cnf folder. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the FrontPage Server Extensions Web server, right-click the Start
menu, and then click Explore to start Windows Explorer.
2. Select the Show all files option by doing one of the following:•
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server:a. On the View menu, click Folder
Options, and then click the Views tab.
b. Click to select the Show all files check box and then click OK.

• Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP
:a. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the Views tab.
b. Click to select the Show all files check box and then click OK.


3. In Windows Explorer, follow these steps:
a. Open the _vti_cnf folder in the folder containing the Web with which
you are having a problem.
b. Select the file listed in the error message described in the
"Symptoms" section of this article and press DELETE.
c. If you are prompted to confirm if you want to send the file to the
Recycle Bin, click Yes.

4. In FrontPage, open the Web site. To do this, click Open Web on the
File menu. In the Open Web dialog box, select your Web site, and then
click Open.

5. On the Tools menu, click Recalculate Hyperlinks.

I checked the names of the files on both my hard drive and on the web
server, as suggested, and all file names I could see are lowercase.

In re the article quoted above, my question now is, what does it mean
"On the FrontPage Server Extensions Web server"? I can't find any way
to see _vti_cnf while looking at the web on the web server via front
page. I did change the folder options on my pc and was able to look at
the _vti_cnf dir but did not see anything with uppercase. If I could
figure out how to see the _vti_cnf dir on the web server that might
provide the answer. Appreciate your help.
