Lost HTML icons

In my folders, an html file has that "no association"
icon. It (the file) does open with internet explorer and
everything seems to be fine except... when I go
to "Folder Options> File Types> (choose html) >Advanced>
Change Icon" I got a "Cannot find icon...etc"... so
I "browsed" and found the 'mshtml.dll' and found the
icons, chose the correct icon, and clicked ok, nothing
changes, I tried system restore, restarting, I even tried
other silly icons just to see if the mshtml.dll file was
the culprit but it won't change. I can change other icons
(as a test) just fine. What do I do to correct this? a
download from Microsoft? an update?

Have you tried resetting Internet Explorer as your default browser? (Control
Panel - Internet Options - Programs tab) If that doesn't do it, I'd suspect
you have some kind of malware that's hijacked your browser. Any other weird
symptoms? Run a virus scan, and while you're at it download/install/run
"SpyBot Search and Destroy" to search for spyware and trojans.

Internet Explorer is my only browser. The icons work in the address bar and
in favorites but do not work in folders such as My Documents, etc... I tried
using the default html file icon on another file type and it works fine, the
icon files are not corrupt, I simply cannot change the icon of the HTM
family of file types to anything other than the non association icon. I have
Spybot (love it) and no mal ware

FWIW, I just tried changing the icon for IE on my computer and got a message
something like "cannot find icon %1." I was then able to choose an alternate
icon, but it made no difference -- the icon in Windows Explorer folders still
looks the same as it always did.

I don't think XP uses the Folder Options control panel to set the IE icon.
Sorry, I don't think I can be much more help. I'd suggest doing a repair of
IE through the Add/Remove Programs control panel (but I ain't trying it on my
own machine! :). Good luck!

I just went through this myself a few days ago.

the answer is here:

RESOLUTION

a.. Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following
location:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile]

b.. Backup the key by exporting it as a REG file. See here for more
information on how to do that.

c.. After backing up the key, delete the htmlfile key from the registry.

d.. Open Internet Explorer and click the Tools menu. Choose Internet
Options and select the Programs tab.

e.. Click Reset Web Settings button and complete the process.

Yep, that sounds like the answer, John. I'd try steps d and e by themselves
first though. My bet is that'd do it -- deleting registry keys is not
something I like doing if I don't have to.
