Lost hard drive

I have lost my drive E/:
I was trying to backup folders on to a DVD from my E/: drive with
Roxio and getting a couple of coasters. A popup message stated that
windows could not save a file E/: (something with a $ and an M in it),
I assumed that it was to do with the problems I was having with Roxio
8.
I restarted windows (XP Pro) ignoring warning messages (I know, I am a
dipstick) and I now have no E/: drive. Disk management now shows an
E/: drive that is not formatted, and a disk missing (not mounted)
Is there any possibility of regaining the info on the disk - it is my
data disk with all my saved music and photo's on it.

It's probably time to get out the backups and do a restore. Have you tried
resetting a REstore Point?

You can rest assured that, at this time, your data is still on the drive -
and safe. That is, until you try to do something that is either unsuccessful
or unsafe. In other words, do nothing to alter the drive as it now is.

You can use a program such as EasyRecovery Professional from www.ontrack.com
to see what is on the drive and the present condition of the files. You can
then recover the "good" files to another disk. Please note that the target
disk must be equal to, or greater in size than the total size of the files
you are attempting to recover.

You can also Google for "File Recovery Programs". There are a few free ones
available. But, I only have experience with the program I have mentioned. It
has saved my bacon quite a few times - once when a data disk went RAW and
showed no partition information at all. I recovered 100% of the information
to a new disk. I then partitioned and formatted the original disk and am
still using it to this day. This happened 4 years ago.
