Lost font in Windows XP

Somehow the font has disappeared and all window displays
are shown in Marlett font ( arrows, dots, squares, etc.)
I am unable to read the instruction in the font utility
to select and install correct fonts. I can enter desktop
properties and adjust the title bars, icon labels and
some other fields to "system" but the change does not
hold after rebooting. Even the text in the Start icon is
affected. Most application show correct font although
Word only allows 5 fonts.

I have reinstalled the fonts in Windows\Fonts folder and
rebooted without success.

Where does Windows look for the fonts?

Start to the Safe Mode and try the System Restore tool from here: "How
to Restore the Operating System to a Previous State in Windows XP"
