Lost files on the desktop

Need help in retrieving files that were lost on the desktop
during upgrade of Windows 98 to Windows XP. Where are they?
or are they gone forever?

Hi,

Look under other user profiles in C:\Documents and Settings. Unfortunately,
sometimes they are not carried over and may be lost permanently (which is
why creating backups before any major upgrade is very important).
