Lost files in windows XP

I was doing some final touch in some documents (about 20)
with an average of 20 pages each, when sudenly the folder
and all documents were missing.

Please, let me know what I Could do to recover the missing
files.
 
Why did the folder and the documents 'suddenly' disappear?
