lost files due to installation

due to installation of windows xp i have lost a large
number of very important files which were in the desktop
folder of windows. prevousley i had windows me and due to
problems with the registry i could not boot, therefore i
could not backup these files. i then installed windows xp
and to my horror found all my files had dissapeared.

is there any way in which these files could be recovred. i
am desperate and any help would be much appreciated. thank
you.

Are you assuming they would still be on the desktop? (Bad Assumption)
Have you searched your computer with hidden files viewable for these files?
