Lost Favorites

In trying to delete (with no success) some persistent listings in the
Favorites folder in the Start column, I goofed and deleted the Favorites and
its icon. I have put a shortcut in the upper half of the column but would
like to get the original listing back in place.
I have been all over MS Knowledge base, about six different XP troubleshooting
sites and find no reference to replacing the Favorites entry.
I tried reinstalling XP Pro from the CD but it will not accept the product
serial number which is listed on the CD envelope. It is not an OEM install
but came with the PC when I bought it in June. I used the product number
finder and get the same number as listed on the envelope so I must be using
the correct number.

Also when I goofed I lost the ALL PROGRAMS icon too. Don't ask how - I'm old
and feeble minded and getting feebler.

"Upper half of the column". Which column is that?
First, check if the favourites are in the Recycle Bin. If yes, restore
them. If no, check if the list of favourites, i.e. the Favorites folder, is
listed in the Folder Tree, i.e. the structure displayed in the Lt. pane of
the My Documents window.
My Computer > Local Disk (C:) >
Documents and Dettings >
{Your Name} >
Favorites
If they are not there, then they are gone. If they are present, do a Repair
Install of your WinXP Pro using the CD. Or, better still, export your list
of favourites to a floppy (Open the IE home page, click [File] on the Menu
Bar > [Import and Export...], then follow the instructions), do a clean
install of WinXP Pro, then import the favourites back to your clean machine.
The 'colume' and they will be reinstated to the appropriate places.

What you need to input to the computer is the Product Key which has 5
segments, each segment has 5 digits of letters or numbers, like what's shown
here in the following pictorial instruction, "Windows XP Clean Install", in
item (12) under Step by Step:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
If you want to do a Repair Install, press the 2nd time when Repair selection
comes up, not the 1st, which is for a special setup procedure called
Recovery Console, an entirely different beast. If you make a mistake here,
restart. But I prefer doing the Clean Install instead as illustrated in the
link. However, all your files will be lost then. So save them on CD first
(and your favourites on floppy).

All your other abnormal behaviour of the computer will disappear, once you
have done the clean install or repair install. Good luck.

Yes, they are very good. You must have spent a lot of effort on them. They
are very detailed. I wish they were in larger size for better viewing
though.
