Lost document

I emailed myself a Word document from work (not to a
Yahoo email account). When I got home, I opened it this
morning and began working on it. I never saved it to a
folder that I can locate such as in My Documents. I just
the the save icon and closed the document. Now I don't
know where it is. I tried opening the original document
from the email and hitting "save as" so I could view the
path. That path is Documents and Setting/Jim/Local
Settings/Temporary Internet Files/OLKB. However, in
Temporary Internet Files there is no OLKB or anything
like it. There are just cookies, etc. from web pages.
Someone please help me. Where did my file go?

If you don't explicitly save the document to a document folder, it is saved
in a temporary folder, which is emptied when you quit Word. In addition to
the other hazards of opening attachments directly (possible macro viruses),
this is the primary reason for avoiding the practice.

If your mail client is doing its job, when you try to open an attachment you
should be getting a message asking you if you *really* want to open it or
prefer to save it, in which case you choose the latter. You can also
right-click on the attachment and choose Save As...

Thanks for the info. When you say "quit Word" do you
mean close the program all together or just that
document? I had other, and still have, other Word docs
opened from that same moment.

If you haven't closed Word, you might still be able to open the document
from the bottom of the File menu. Since I have never opened an attachment
this way, I'm not clear whether it gets crashed on closing, on quitting
Word, or on shutting down Windows, but it does get deleted when the temp
folder is flushed (which might depend on your settings in your browser or
mail client).

"That path is Documents and Setting/Jim/Local Settings/Temporary Internet
Files/OLKB. However, in Temporary Internet Files there is no OLKB or
anything like it. " (this is the default temp for files opened in MS IE or
OE. Netscape and others use a different location.

Depending upon how you have the settings for both Internet Explorer and
Windows Explorer?

These types of files may not show "IF" you do not have Windows Explorer set
to "Show Hidden Files and Folders."

Internet Explorer has a setting where "Temp files" may be deleted upon
closing. It's not the default however many people use it.

Open Windows Explorer
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Tools
Folder Options
View
Scroll down to the 10th line and tick/check "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
Ok yourself out and refresh screen (F5)

If you haven't or don't clean this folder regularly, it is possible to have
THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of files there.
And the task of finding the one you desire could be daunting. If, that's so
you might try sorting them by date or name or file type to enhance your
view.
