I am the administrator of my laptop running XP Pro. Last week, the icons on
the desktop disappeared. I still have the desktop folder, but all icons,
including the recycle bin, are only in this folder, but the desktop screen
only shows the background and menu bar.

How can I get the icons back on the desktop? I cannot restore to an earlier
time as the problem has existed for some time.

TIA.

Hi,

Is the `All User` folder in the documents and settings? I usually holds the
common desktop settings, also check to see if there is another profile
folder with your name.PCNAME. if so, for some reason XP created a new
account with nothing in it.

Do you have Show Desktop Icons feature turned off.
1. Right-click the desktop.
2. Point to Arrange Icons By and then click Show Desktop Icons.

To add the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons
back to your desktop:

1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3. Under Desktop icons, click to select the check boxes of the icons you want to
view.
4. Click OK two times.

That worked. Thanks.
