I presume you mean loss of the CD-ROM drive.

Which service pack(s)? SP4 causes a lot of trouble (a fact you would have
picked up if you monitor this NG regularly -- I've decided not to apply it,
since my W2K system is working just fine as is.) Do _not_ apply service
packs if your system is working OK - If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix it is the
premier rule of computer maintenance! If you are worried about viruses, then
set all options in IE and OE to highest security levels, and keep your AV
program updated.

If you are using the latest Norton AV, it has serious conflicts with SP4, and
a variety of bad experiences have been reported here, but loss of CD-ROM
drives is the most common.. AFAIK, there is no fix yet. If you have the
latest Norton AV, uninstall it, and see if that fixes the problem.

Otherwise, try a Repair -- which should remove the SPs you installed. If that
doesn't work, AFAIK a reinstall or fresh install will be your only options.

Good luck.
