Have been using Windows Mail with no problems for 3 months. But now get this
error message.

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk',
Server: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Have tried suggestions in 'Working with Windows Mail' help page.

My internet connection still works fine ... the problem is just with Windows
Mail. A BIG thank you to anyone who can help.

What anti virus software do you have installed?
Was it updated recently?
Is it set to scan incoming mail?

Norton 360 .. and yes it was updated today ... and yes it is set to scan
incoming email. Sounds like that might be the cause. Look forward to hearing
your solution. Many thanks Steve.

Norton antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Symptoms often don't surface until several months have gone by, or
until an update occurs.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning. If that does not cure the
problem, do a trial uninstall, followed by using their debris removal tool:

Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of overly
intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

In any case you must disable antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

Thanks Gary. I've kept copy of your advice ... as by running Norton Update
again, I have been able to reconnect using Windows Mail. But I will be
prepared for possible problem in the future .. so am grateful for your
advice. Thank you.
